Smoking a turkey where do I put the wood?

Obviously, I put the wood with the Lava rocks- Right? This is the first time I'm using my smoker and I just wanted to checkSomeone told me to put the wood in the waterHe is stupid and I am right- Right?

Sort ofIf you have a smoker it should have a fire boxno Lava rockMaybe a description or model would helpThe wood must burn ( smolder ) to create smokeIf you have a gas grill with lave rock and you want to use it as a smoker and do not have a smoker box for itYou can use a heavy aluminum foil pan on top of the lava rockPut the soaked chips in the pan and cover loosely with foilPlace on the rocks on one side with the burner onPut the Turkey on the other with the burner offIt is getting late so you need fairly high heat to cook in time for dinnerMy smoker can hold 4-5 turkeysI smoke mine for about 12 hrsat 200-210Edit: Do not put wood chips directly on the rockThe ashes will fill the gaps between the rocksThey can also clog the burner when you turn it off.
