For the most part. Hematite, magnetite and the other ores are mainly iron oxide, same as rust, although rust is highly hydrated, while the ores are pure oxide. Also, Pyrite (fool's gold) is an iron ore, and it's iron sulfide, not iron oxide. Most commonly used iron ores are the oxides, though.
They make a spray in a can just for that and you can get it at places like Krogers. It's called Salt Eraser and it's safe.
