Nobody here can tell you. Walls next to stairways are usually pretty important, though. I'm not saying that it can't be done, but you need someone to determine whether or not this is a load-bearing wall. If it is, there are techniques for transferring the load from the studs you want to remove to the remaining structure (reinforced to handle the load). It's a lot like putting a window into an exterior wall.
A regular Ugly Stik isn't even in the same category as a Berkley Shock. (The Shock is more expensive and built on a graphite blank.) It's like trying to compare apples and oranges. Ugly Stiks are not bad rods. They just tend to be less sensitive and heavy compared to a graphite-blanked rod. Even the newer Ugly Stik Lite and Select Series would be less sensitive and heavy compared to a Shock. Does that mean the Shock is better? No. It depends on what you will be using the rod for, (90% of the time)- Will you mainly be using this outfit for Soft Plastic fishing? Crankin? Swim-baits? Etc. If your lookin' to do a lot of Crankin', an Ugly Stik would probably be a better rod for you. If you need to feel the lightest tap of a strike while fishing a worm or jig the Shock would be better. Durability is another factor- Do you take care of your equipment or like to use and abuse it? If you take care of your fishing equipment (and are careful) then a Shock would work for ya. However, if you tend to abuse your equipment, you may want to lean toward the Ugly Stik. Hope this helps?
