Question:

strong nasty smell coming from bathroom sink?

my sink has a stench coming up from the drain i believe. not sure what it is or how it got to smell so bad, but seems like it only comes up when i turn the water on(like the water gets the smell moving). really dont know what to do here? any advice?

Answer:

Hi This smell must be coming from the cat litter. Remove all old litter & wash boxes. Soak boxes with 1/4part clorox & 3/4water for at least an hour. Remove cats from area & close door so they don't try to get into it. Rinse boxes thoroughly & dry, preferably in the sun. Refill with fresh cat litter (with baking soda if possible). All of the ammonia smell should be gone! =) Hope it works for ya!
This has happened to me before. Just pour some bleach into the drain and don't turn on the water or anything that would wash away the bleach for a while.
You need to remove the drain cover and remove the inner parts under the drain cover. There is probably hair and other debris stuck in there. Get a small drain cleaner at Lowe's and remove all the gunk. Then get an old tooth brush and clean all around inside the drain.
The P trap is dirty this is the drain directly under your sink. There is no need to call a plumber you should be able to do this yourself. remove every thing from under your sink use a small bucket to place under the trap because there will be some water not much, loosen the plastic fittings twist the nuts to the left to take them off and turn them to the right to put them on you may need to use a tool to break or loosen the nut if it is to tight. After you have cleaned the trap out (washed it and removed what ever is in it ) put the trap back together loosely at first to fit every thigh up then you can hand tighten the nuts keep the bucket under the sink put some water in the sink and then drain as you are looking at the trap for leak tighten as required.
You've already gotten good advice. One more thing to check though. If you have an overflow on your sink, typically a small hole just below the top of the sink, that could be where the smell is coming from. The overflow allows water to drain out if you've left the stopper closed and the water running. The water goes down through the inside of the body of the sink and connects to the drain line. On most sinks, water can collect inside. This can get very smelly. If, after cleaning the drain line, you put your nose near the overflow hole and detect the smell, use a funnel or a measuring cup to pour your favorite cleaning solution into the hole. Put in at least a cup and let it sit for an hour. Then pour hot water in. If you can find a bottle brush that will fit through the hole, a good scrubbing, followed by soaking and flushing, will do wonders. Flush it every month or two to keep it smelling fresh. Even if you've never allowed water to come up to the overflow, water will come into the space any time the drain backs up, even a little.
