The lightning rod is not used to attract lightning, but rather to help avoid it. The idea is that the rod will help keep the air around it at a neutral charge. It is the difference in charges that attract each other. A negative charge will be attracted to a positive charge. In the event that the rod can not neutralize enough air, then if lightning does strike, then hopefully, the rod would shunt the charge straight to ground through the rod and cabling attached. good luck
