Question:

Symptoms of a bad wheel bearing?

So I just got my car back from the shop. 3 months ago the deal told me the rear axel was leaking grease. I took it to a mechanic (hoping for a cheaper price) and told him what was wrong. My car would squeak on occasion and one night as I was driving I heard a metal on metal scraping noise. I figured it was the lack of grease in the rear axel so I decided to get it looked at. The mechanic said I was fine on my rear axel but replaced the seals on my transmission. I started hearing the same noise again today as I was going to park it. I‘m thinking it might be the wheel bearing but I‘m not sure. If they were going bad, would they always make the noise? I drove it around quite a bit in between hearing the sound. Help!

Answer:

The wheel bearings make a grinding noise when they go bad. You can check the wheels by lifting the car and trying to move the wheels back and forth, not around. If you notice any movement the bearing is bad.
