Answer:

I can understand your cats hesitance with the Science Diet-it has alot less salt in it than the diets you are feeding nowWhich is a good thing, as high sodium diets have been linked to kidney deterioration and older animals have their share of issues already :-)Was it a Prescription Diet or could you get it from a pet store? I ask because there is a Prescription Diet w/d Chicken Flavor available in a canned formula that cats likeYou will still have to do a gradual change-mixing new and old food in gradually increased increments (1/4 new food with 3/4 old food for 3 days, 1/2 and 1/2 for 3 days, then 1/4 old food and 3/4 new food) as you don't want to cause stomach upsetPlus, cats can be pretty resistant to changes as they age and the last thing you want is a cat that won't eatGive it another tryI definitely recommend avoiding grocery pet foods (as they are typically high in sodium and minerals that can be detrimental to the urinary tract and skin), and avoid any foods that don't specifically say they have been fed in feeding trialsCheck the AAFCO guidelines on the side of the bag (usually near the guaranteed analysis)If the statement says this food has been formulated, avoid it like the plagueIt hasn't ever been fed to an animal, thus hasn't been proven to be beneficial for themThis also means that the food could actually be harmful if it is fed long termSince there is no clinical data collected on it, you have nothing to go onI do pet food label comparisons at the veterinary hospital where I work, and this is the information I give our clientsFoods that have been researched and fed in feeding trials are your best betThey have been proven.
Frankly, I believe a landlord is like any other businessIf you don't like the product (housing) - move! I get so bloody sick and hired hearing people scream SUE, often claiming their civil rights have been violatedThere is no such thing as a right to a home, much less one of any kind of standard dictated by the governmentI'm not saying you suggested any of this: it's just the slap-dash post by another person here who got me goingNow that's off my chest, here's what you do: Contact the New Jersey Deptof Community AffairsAccording to their web site: The Division of Codes and Standards establishes and enforces building codes, in partnership with the State's municipalities, to protect the health and safety of New Jersey residentsThe Division enforces the Hotel and Multiple Dwelling Law, the Uniform Construction Code implementing the building, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, energy, mechanical, elevator, radon, asbestos, rehabilitation and barrier-free subcodes, and lead hazard abatement; it oversees carnival and amusement ride inspections, LPGas installations, rooming and boarding house licensing, and the State's New Home Warranty programPhone: (609) 292-7898 or (609) 292-7899 The flat sounds horrible, so I hope you have some luck getting things fixed.
I've gone raw to increase fiber and add enzymes to his diet due to digestive issuesMy cat LOVES tunaSo I use the cheaper human grade tuna in WATERI mix the tuna with whatever I want him to eatI've started with lettuce because he loves grass outside but can't process it-and he doesn't want cat grass grown just for him, inside the houseI mix the tuna and water with the SLIVERED lettuceHe leaves bigger chunks behindI introduced lamb (raw from the pet store, but I hear human grade is fine from grocery store) by mixing it in a little at a time into the tuna and lettuce mixtureNow he'll eat a small chunk of lamb plain as a treatHe seems to like the lettuce more when it's been soaked in tuna waterSo I mix in a rubbermaid container the can of tuna+water, lettuce and lamb, and let it marinateI am looking for more fiber options, though, for more nutrition and interest in his foodIt did take him a few days to get used this food, though.
