My copy of Industrial Psychology by Tiffin and McCormick (1965) refers to the industrial revolution as a major change in the nature of human work . . . functions that were formerly carried out by hand with the use of hand tools became mechanized. The jobs created from this process involved the operation and maintenance of the machinery. Automation has continued this process so that many machine operation functions are computer controlled. A good example of this is the automated machine shop where the machine operator will enter a program rather than directly adjust the machining operations. Automation is I believe the term you're looking for. Though I don't know how to relate it to WW1 and the post-war period.
