Question:

Need immediate help: smoke detector won't stop beeping!?

The smoke detector began to go off when I was preparing food, so I panicked and removed the battery so it would shut up. It did, but now it is making small chirps every minute or so. I put the battery back in and closed the battery compartment, but it won't stop. Please help me.

Answer:

Amalgam fillings aren't dangerous or 'bad' by any means. Mercury, in tiny quantities is perfectly fine, and don't exist in most fillings anymore. Mercury is found in some of the most everyday things- such as water and fish! High levels, of course- are dangerous, but tiny, minute levels certainly don't harm a person. Remember, there are some teeth where an amalgam filling is the only one appropriate. 'silver' fillings are generally used for the back molars, due to their resistance to chewing. Resin 'white' fillings usually can't be used for back teeth, as they're more likley to crack, fall out due to the chewing pressure. Many dentists will ONLY place silver amalgam fillings in the back molars, as they're high impact chewing areas, and it saves you teh trouble of having to get it re-done due to breakage. The health guidelines do have certain rules about mercury, but there's nothing to prove that silver amalgam fillings are bad for the health, or shouldn't be used. Silver Amalgam fillings are perfectly within the health guidelines. If you're worried about it, speak to your dentist about this issue. They can talk you through it. Remember, most dentists will only provide 'resin' fillings in certain areas due to the strength of the material.
Placing speed bumps on roadways is in violation of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices - a federal publication giving the states rules on the movement and regulation of traffic. mutcd.fhwa.dot /
