Question:

Thin wood sheets for Ceiling of basement?

I have unfinished basement with insulation hanging from top. I am thinking about covering it with something to make a ceiling for the basement. What is the cheapest, thinnest, and lightweight material that I can use for this project? any help will be greatly appreciated. Basement is about 30 ft by 80 ft (approx.)

Answer:

You can buy both balsa wood and bass wood at most craft stores in the arts and crafts department. They are availible in strips that are 2-4 wide and 2-4 feet long in differnet thicknesses. You will also find a wide variety of findings and fittings you might like to use as well as any glues and finishes. Michael's, JoAnn's, Hobby Lobby....
You can buy 1/4 plywood that is referred to as luaun board. A good lumber yard should have this at a low price. There are different grades of plywood so the price will vary. Installed cleanly and painted, this option would look like a finished ceiling. The only less expensive way would probably be colored plastic sheeting or fabric sheeting.
