Question:

tire pressure in cold weather?

Having problems with brand new car tires. Any time the temperature falls I have to put air in my tires. what can be causing this problem. My wife who also has new tires it‘s having the same problem is not all the tires, just certain ones. are they defective?

Answer:

Drive the vehicle until all temperatures are at normal operating levels, then check the tyres.
The problem of lower tire pressure when the temperature is cold is related directly the Ideal Gas Law nRT PV Temperature (proportional to) Pressure * Volume In this example, n (# moles) and R (gas constant) can be ignored Since the volume of the tire is essentially constant, changes in T (proportional to) changes in P Decreases is Temperature mean decreases in Pressure.
No, I doubt that the tires are defective. The ideal gas law says that as temperature decreases either volume or pressure decreases. The volume in a tire is fixed (approximately) thus the pressure decreases with changes in temperature. I commend you check your tire pressure regularly and adjust them as temperature changes. Tires work and wear best if they are adjusted to the recommended tire pressure by the manufacturer. I just completed that task on my vehicles this morning since it has turned colder in the last couple of days. Had to add air to all of them to compensate for the change. In the spring, will have to let some air out as temperatures warm back up. Not sure why not all the tires were affected. Could be that the tire pressure was not equal in all of them to begin with. I couldn't afford it but did spend extra for a highly accurate tire pressure gauge and haven't seen that problem since. I believe that tire pressures are to be measured at cold (meaning ambient) temperatures rather than warming them up.
