Question:

Tire size compatibility?

Can I have a 245 70 16 tire put on a 235 70 16 rim?

Answer:

No such thing as a 235 70 16 rim. You are asking the wrong question, in the wrong way. What you should be asking is: Can I install (tire size X) on (year / make / model) which originally had (tire size Y)?
Probably, but your answer will depend on the width of the rims you are taking about. What is the rim size, 16 by what?
Rim sizes are expressed as diameter x width. Your rim is 16 so any 16 tyre will fit, however there are optimal tyre/rim sizes. Fitting a 245 tyre shouldn't be a problem as most common rim widths accept tyres one or two sizes wider without problem. The rim width is usually cast into the wheel somewhere and will be something like 7JJ the width being seven inches, and JJ being the tyre seat profile. Rims have all been JJ for the last thirty years soo don't worry about it. Try andmatch tyre width on each axle, having one odd size tyre may affect your car's handling but will get your out of a bind temporarily. Also note the wider tyre is also taller so watchit doesn't foul on the car or suspension. It may also raise your gearing giving you more sluggish acceleration and incorrect speedometer reading.
