Question:

Transforming a cheap guitar into a good one ( Acoustic )?

Okay so here's where I'm atI have a lot of time on my hands before I go off to college and I'm pretty quot;Artsyquot;I've decided to try and transform a Guitar than try and learn how to play it My friend has an old guitar that he doesn't want anymore , all I know is that its a cheap black guitar I was planning on taking it apart sanding down the body and doing a custom paint job with acrylic paint than putting an oil-based poly gloss on itI want to replace everything else ( neck , bridge , strings ,tuning machines , ETC ) I was just looking for advice on brands and everything since I'm new to guitars I KNOW this sounds like a waste of money because I could just buy a decent guitar for what I'm going to be spending , but I don't really care because for me its about the project not the costHowever , I'm looking for the total cost to be under 1.5k a little more if absolutely necessary Thanks for the advice

Answer:

Aluminiumoxid is a salt and consists of ionsAn aluminium ion has a charge of 3+ and an Oxygen ion has a charge of 2- In order to be stable and have an average charge of 0, you need two aluminium ions and three Oxygen ionsAluminium has 3 electrons in its outer electronshell, which is why it has a valency of threeAn aluminium-ion wants to have 0 elektrons in its outer shellIn order to do so it needs to get rid of three electronsSince elektrons have a negative charge, the charge of the aluminium-ion is 3+Same goes for Oxygen but in stead of getting rid of electrons it wants to snatch two electrons, which gives it a charge of 2-
You might make it look pretty but you will NOT make it good sounding or good to playRefinishing a cheap guitar is not going to transform plywood into spruceUnless you are a very experienced luthier, you are not going to remove the neck from an acoustic guitar and then reset it correctly, much less correct any issues that made the guitar cheap in the first place Acrylic paint OR polyurethane will make the thing sound like a cardboard box when you're done with itThe finish on an acoustic guitar must allow the top and sides to vibrate - especially the topToo much of the wrong goop will dampen the sound just as surely as wrapping it in a wet blanket wouldTry this: go to a music store that sells used guitars, and compare a Takamine with almost any other guitarNotice how quiet the Tak isIts because it's finished with polyLooks nice, sounds like crap A good guitar has numerous thin coats of lacquer on itThat lightweight finish allows the guitar to breathe and to sound Sobottom line: want an art project that will look interesting but probably never play as good as it does now and definitely will not play like a $1500 guitar after you spend all that money and time? go for itWant a good guitar? Spend half of your money on a used Guild, Martin, or Taylor then spend the other half on some private lessonsPlaying guitar is AWESOME! Just try it! I've been playing guitar for over 40 years now and I love it more and more every day.
