If I had to choose just one translation? I would choose the King James trans lation. But when I study I use both the King James and NIV. The King James is by far the best and most accurate. But there are a few verses while accurate could have a better translation of some words. That is where the NIV comes in. By reading and comparing them in study you can get a much better understanding of the full and true meaning of what is being told to us. Not that either is wrong, it is just a matter of degree of accuracy. The only way of doing better. Would be to be an expert in all of the languages in which the texts were written in and translated from. If you have choose just one translation let it be the King James. God bless

IE: Wheel hard over (= Roda dura mais). Out of context, the quotation you cite makes more sense asthe wheel over position ... is required when Thorn Island is ahead at 1.31 miles". Meaning that when proceeding to Thorn Island and you are (or estimate to be) within just over a mile, swing the wheel hard over. (Hopefully the rest of the narrative will advise whether to swing it to port or to starboard!)
