Question:

use a modeling light as my key light?

can you use, or is a modeling light another term for key light.can i buy a modeling light, use it to correctly light my model, and then when i take the picture, the modeling light will flash?

Answer:

any light can be used as key, from a match to a street light, key light means the main light and the strongest one a modeling light is a constant light on a studio flash unit that allows one to get an idea of the effect the flash will have
A modeling light is not a key light. A modeling light does not flash. A modeling light is simply a lower wattage bulb that will stay on as your lighting your subject so you can see what the actual flash bulb is going to do. So when you have a strobe you have two bulbs: the modeling light and the actual flash tube. The modeling light will not light the model when you push the shutter release on your camera. However, you could potentially use a modeling light for photography purposes if you didnt want to use flash but theres really not much light from it at all.
ummm, yes... sort of.. When you buy a flash unit with a light so you can see what your doing it has been called a modeling light.. the flash tube on my flash heads go around the socket that holds the constant light so the light and the flash have the same look on the image. I use a power pack that powers up to 4 flash heads and use a radio remote to trigger it with most often.
