Question:

Using fog lights and headlights together?

When using fog lights, do you keep your headlights on as well? Or can the fog lights only be used in conjunction with headlights? Sorry if this is a dumb question :(

Answer:

I'm finding this quite amazing that so many people are getting the facts wrong. Fog lights must only be used on their own. Not with headlights, either in full or dipped. As a guide they should only be switched on when it is becoming difficult to see the car in front of you. Not, as I see often, when there is a slight mist. Other drivers find that when people use rear fog light quite blinding when they are switched on in good visibility. The main purpose of front fog lights is to stop the glare that headlights, even dipped, cause when fog is present. The current trend that some people think it's 'cool' to switch both sets of lights on is totally illegal. See Highway Code rule 226. (UK only)
sadly everyone seems to think that running the fog lights and headlights is cool but technically its illegal unless there is fog the fog lights should be off and the reason its illegal is too much light coming at the other driver fog lights are not legal for driving at night with out headlights most cars with factory fog lights will not allow the fogs w/o the headlights anyway the police rarely enforce the fog light rule but its there if they need a reason to pull you over
Most new cars will disable the fog lights when you switch to high beams. Nothing wrong with having more lights on to get the attention of that teen texting. Edit: I didn't realize most states it is illegal. I can't imagine how two little lights at the bottom of your car impairs peoples vision. I guess someone got bees in their bonnet about my texting joke. Seriously though, there are enough people on the road not paying attention, and if having my fogs on catches someone from pulling out in front of me or hitting my car and protects mine or my familes life then write me the ticket.
First, ignore the person who said they are illegal. Manufacturers wouldn't be allowed to put fog lights on a vehicle at the factory if it was illegal. Second, there's no limit on how much light you can put off, as long as the lights are DOT approved and not aimed at oncoming drivers' eyes, but primarily the DOT approval. Second, most cars don't let you turn the fog lights on without the headlights on, because if you need fog LIGHTS, then you need lights in general.
Fog lights actually, should be wired to work ONLY with low beam lights. In mostr states this is the law. Never drive with just the fog lights on. They don't provide enough visual distance for safety.
