Question:

using oxiclean in a carpet cleaning machine?

I have a carpet shampooer, and I'm doing my spring cleaning, and my carpets are off white, and as you can imagine they get quite dingy, especially in winter when people are walking in snow. I have quite a lot of traffic dirt and random spots. I've not been impressed in the past with the shampoo that came with my machine. Could I use oxiclean in my machine to brighten my carpets?

Answer:

Oxy clean has been known to permanently damage the carpet dyes. And James is correct. These toy machines leave soap residue in the carpet that becomes a dirt/soil magnet.
this isnt a good idea.. Oxiclean is an optical brightener and most home machines dont have the suction to remove all the soap or cleaner once applied and that is why carpets get dingy so quick due to the soap residue and probably like most people recommended is good more is better right? all that added soap dint get pulled out by the machine so it is left to dry in a sticky mess.. using oxiclean and your carpet color Im afraid if sunlight hits it it will turn it kind of an off green color. What I do for my carpets I run vinegar and water. mainly and then spot spray with the cleaner.. depending on the carpets age and material what you are seeing as dirt and dingy may be wear patterns and those will never be removed.
You most likely could do that if you add about a 1/4 cup of anti-foaming agent to each batch of soap solutuion. It is available at the carpet cleaning rental station at most grocery stores. It keeps the foam from overwhelming and damaging the machine.
