Question:

Using Vermiculite and/or Perlite?

Can anyone explain to me the uses of these item for growing plants?Am I right in thinking that vermiculite it better for germination and then perlite is better once the plant is a bit larger? Can you mix them? Do they really make any difference?Any insight or personal experiences would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:

........and........? Vermiculite add some water holding, perlite loosens and fluffs the soil. If you are thinking sand, no, perlite is much, much larger than sand. Adding sand to a soil can be dangerous...if added to clay you end up with an elemental concrete......not good. Normally adding organic matter does the same thing to the garden soil as does adding vermiculite and perlite.
u mite try Miracle Grow... they make great soils w/ food/ all that stuff
