Question:

Valve/pipe leaking from toilet?

I don't know exactly what it is called...the water valve from the wall to the toilet is leaking. All of the parts need to be replaced. They appear old and corroded. Can you please tell me what these parts are called? About how much they cost? And is this difficult to do? I found an excellent video on youtube on how to replace..but just want to ask anyway if it's difficult..it doesn't LOOK difficult.

Answer:

It's called a shut off valve, costs 6-7 dollars depending where you buy it. You will have to match the size of the valve to the size and type of the pipe coming out of the wall, could be copper or threaded steel pipe. Also replace the line from the valve to the toilet, this will have to be matched to the valve as well. Not a hard job but matching up all these things can be tricky if you don't know what you are looking at. Might be easier to get a handyman or plumber. If you do try it yourself do not forget to turn off the water - might have to turn the whole house off.
Before you start taking things apart try this. Find out where the water is coming from. You may have to sit there for a while to watch for a drip. If it is coming from where the knob to shut it off is, there is a nut behind the knob. Try tightening it a little. Don't really lean on it. If the leak is from the line to the toilet do the same thing. Just tightening things may solve your problem at no cost. Best of luck.
