can you give me some tips so that new vinyl tile floor will adhere to old floor. new vinyl tiles are self stick type
Firstly. I do not like self stick tiles,,,yet they keep wanting me to lay them,,I get paid so I do it. I much prefer the more commercial type that is thicker and longer wearing and I apply my own brand of glue. If you are ''doubleing up it's important that the glue stick to the old tile. It need a good mop down and a good rinse and be perfectly dry when the new stuff goes down. Roughing up the old stuff with a rough sandpaper only make the new tiles harder to stick because there is not enough glue on the new to fill any voids on the old. So that suggestion from anyone is void.
I'd caution you to only do this if the self stick tiles are very well adhered. If they are well adhered you can install vinyl over it but make sure that it is smooth. To prevent the embossing pattern of your old tiles from showing through the new floor you can go to a home center and buy some embossing leveler. Apply the embossing leveler with a flat trowel in a thin layer. Once the leveler is dry, you can begin installing your new flooring. I'm assuming you've attempted to remove a portion of the old floor already hence your statement..very difficult to remove existing vinyl floor. You will have to fill in the area you attempted to remove with some scrap flooring to bring it back up to the level of your old floor. Finally as a word of caution, don't expect the manufacturer of your new flooring to uphold any warranty claims as most flooring manufacturers require an approved underlayment be installed prior to installing a new floor. clean the floor very well use a self leveling thin set and just skim the entire surface making a light coat be sure that it is even and thin let it dry completely use a large drywall taping knife (big putty knife) to spread it after its dry scrape any high spots and sweep it really good then make a chalk line at your center point spread a vinyl adhesive with the big putty knife barely leaving any and let that air dry until it has flashed over then begin to lay your lick and stick tiles pressing them firmly into place when you are done roll the entire floor with a 50 to 75 lbs roller this will set the tile into the pressure sensitive glue and you will have no problems any other way is the wrong way
