Question:

we want floor boards downstairs?

the floor is concrete at the moment, but we cant have them far off the ground. can the boards go straight onto the concrete?

Answer:

The best way to do walls or floors in the basement is to first install treated strips of wood, then add a thin type of insulated board between them to reduce moisture.
Moisture is the big issue. Wood floors over concrete can be either glued down, or floated. A glued down floor is self explanatory. A floating floor is laid over a layer of moisture resistant foam, and held in place by virtue of its own weight and shoe molding around the baseboards. A good flooring store will come to your house and measure the moisture in the concrete with a moisture meter before selling you any product.
