Question:

Welding wire in car?

Has anyone ever used welding wire in their car audio setup? Is it more flexible or less than other car power wire? Is this a big problem? Is it a good or bad jacket?Would you use it again?I am looking at buying some welding wire from weldingsupply because it is .81 per foot. I would love to know if anyone has done this before and what they thought. The wire i am looking at is 4 gague.

Answer:

It is actaully the exact same wire as the auto manufacturs use.... just bigger gauge is all. Edit... I see most people don't see it as possible.... well let me ask you this, How different do you think copper wire can be from another copper wire? If you really wanted too you can use speaker wire for power wire.... because at the end of the day wire is wire!
First off- it is cheaper than audio power wire, you can buy it as thick as 3 ought, I've seen it used. But flexibility is a big deal when hiding power wire, at least I think so, and welding wire is not the most flexible but it is better than solid wire, and power currant runs faster through audio power wire because of the small cooper strands that make up the wire. Than in welding wire because it has thicker and not as many strands that make up the wire, currant will run slower. Will any wire work? yes........ go to a smaller local audio dealer and ask the owner for info
Most (smart) SPL competitors use welding wire. Because of one thing, it's cheaper. Go for it. You'll save much money. It's not as fine as audio wire, but you can make up for that by buying larger wire, still cheaper. I use welding wire in my audio system. It's well worth the dollars saved. Good Luck!
it should be fine it is about like the monster wire the jacket is a little thinner but it is also stiffer jacket it is not quite as flexible but it is very close as far as picking up stray signals (engine noise ) i don,t know that is not something welding cable is designed to stop regular amp wiring does have a thicker jacket which insulates it more
i did almost 15 years ago it was ship and i like the wire the problem was engine noise for 3 months and i refuse to believe it was on a simple cable but once i replace it with 4 gauge normal inexpensive wire the noise was solve not a good idea
