Question:

What are CV joints & what are the axles?

I need to replace my axles, but is there such a thing as just replacing the joints? I know that the CV boots are torn, so I have to replace that, but what about the joints? Is replacing the axle replacing everything (includes boots joints)?-Lexus es 300

Answer:

They are the same. you should buy them as one unit. axle, and joints, with 2 boots When the boot is torn, the grease comes out and starts to wear out. the axles are part of the unit. PS. if you are replacing the CV joints, I would recommend replacing the wheel bearings while you are at it, that way that portion of the car should be good for another 100,000 miles. To be a little more specific. the axles are the metal rods you can see. The CV joints are inside the rubber boots.

It would probably be cheaper to have it rebuilt. I have a 78 Firebird and it is looking like it will be way cheaper to be rebuilt
CV or constint valacety joints are on ether end of your drive axles thet go to the dirve wheels of your car and are consealed in a rubber boot and wheen the boot brakes and lets dirt into the cv joint thay need to be replaced or you will wind up ether pushing draging or towing your car every whare you like to go for it will not function vary well with out them but you will gane muse and tone to your body and will be in good health by pushing your car to and from work every day but alow extra time for im shure that you will not beable to push your car as fast as the car can go when working right so if i wear you i would have them replaced and save your salfe alot of problems of haveing to push your car every place you need to go
cv joints join the transmission to the axle and axle again to the hubs. they are suppose to have boots on them filled with special grease to prevent wear and debris. replacing a axle with cv joints does require new everything. when you get a new axle they will supply you with new boots and grease. normally when someone has torn boots it's not long till the joints get worn out. and the axle becomes useless
