Combustion requires four things to maintain itself. It requires fuel, oxygen, sufficient temperature and the nuclear reaction that takes place during combustion. Remove any four of these things from the equation and combustion will cease. So if a pile of sticks is on fire, the fire will burn itself out if no more sticks are added. If unburned sticks are removed from the pile, the fire will cease sooner. That's the fuel part of the equation. Second is oxygen. Oxygen is consumed during combustion and is required to maintain it. Smothering a fire with a blanket or other barrier cuts the fire off from its oxygen supply (the air) and causes the fire to go out. Water does the same thing but also cuts combustion off from the third requirement: temperature. When the temperature falls, combustion is weakened. When it falls far enough, combustion stops. This is because the fuel source itself doesn't burn, but rather the off-gasing of the source is what actually burns. Different fuel sources have different temperatures at which they can no longer produce combustable gases. CO2 extinguishers are great for fighting fires in this capacity. The final requirement for combustion is the nuclear reaction itself. When the reaction cannot be sustained, the fire dies. Halon extinguishers are used for this purpose. Contrary to urban myth, Halon extinguishers do not 'suck the oxygen out of the room' to put out the fire. Rather, the Halon gas displaces the breathable air, making it hazardous to be around when Halon is discharging in a computer filled room where they are used the most. When Halon contacts the combusting material it also creates a toxic byproduct which is very harmful to breathe. But Halon actually works by inhibiting the nuclear reaction required to sustain combustion.
