Question:

What are some common machines that run on AC motors, and some that run on DC motors? ?

What are some common machines that run on AC motors, and some that run on DC motors? ?

Answer:

Actually, the transformer changes the AC voltage to another AC voltage. The part that changes it to DC is called the rectifier, which can either block AC of the wrong polarity, or change the polarity of the AC pulses to all be of the same polarity (a bridge rectifier does this). After rectification, the voltage is no longer AC but pulsing DC. You can then add a filter of some kind, like a large capacitor, to smooth out the pulses into a steady DC output.
DC Motors Toys, windows in cars, seats in cars, hand drills and most other less than 1 HP applications. The largest common application is in railroad engines, the diesel engine runs a generator, that then powers DC motors in the axles. AC Motors Kitchen appliances, house fans, lathes, mills and most industrial machinery.
Big DC motors tend to be more expensive than big AC ones. DC motors tend to be used, industrially as backups that run off of a battery. Obviously most power distribution in general is AC. You get higher torque from 3 phase squirrel cage motors and the like. DC isn't easy to distribute long distances as it has to be inverted, transformed and rectified again for long distances. Common machines that run AC are things like the compressor in your fridge, washing machines, tumble dryers, vacuum cleaners and more. DC motors are in battery operated things, like portable CD players, hard disk drives and even more recently hybrid cars etc. Hope this helps.
