in most situations, the flow velocity is the important factor, gas or liquid, most products and /or applications, will have a desirable flow velocity, to keep within. also the higher the flow velocity, the greater pressure loss. off the top of my head, steam and gases 80 m/s, oils 15m/s, suction lines suppling pumps 5m/s, milk (so you dont damage the product) 6m/s,.etc etc. also high flow velocities give noise, which maybe a consideration, gas over 100m/s makes heaps of noise, and the db can be calculated, liquids over 25m/s became nosie, from the flow veloicty and the volume transfer you want then calculate the pipe ID.
