Question:

What are some good brands of potting soil to use?

I‘m looking for a soil that isn‘t a mix, or that is mixed 50% vermiculite. I‘m planting rose seeds, and need one that drains well. Thank you in advance!

Answer:

Hi there, I am delighted to see someone planting rose seeds! It's definitely a labor of love. I would get a good quality mix like MiracleGro's moisture control and mix it 50/50 with straight vermiculite and then once they get their second set of leaves, put the entire plant plus dirt into a larger pot surrounded with the potting soil :full strength. I start seeds in small (3-4 ounce) plastic drinking cups, hte kind that are translucent white thin plastic. - I just poke holes in the bottom for drainage and set them in a small foil pan for drainage. You can mark which rose seed it is, date planted, etc. on the side with a Sharpie marker. It's slow growing, but so rewarding when they start to really leaf out and then bloom.
Black Gold has an excellent line of soils and has many different mixes to choose from. Also they are certified organic.
