In Italy one can find: 1. The Italian Alps (Monte Bianco, shared with France, is the highest mountain in the Alps) 2. The Dolomites (mountain range which is part of the Southern Limestone Alps) 3. The Appennines (mountain range which runs throughout most of the length of Italy; they join with the Ligurian Alps in the northwest) 4. Lago di Garda (largest lake in Italy; found in the north; Gardaland, the 3rd most visited theme park in Europe is situated along the lake's shore) 5. Mount Vesuvius (volcano found in Naples in the south; this is responsible for the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum; the only active volcano in mainland Europe; last erupted in 1944) 6. Mount Etna (volcano in Sicily; continuous activity) 7. Stromboli (volcano island off the north coast of Sicily; continuous activity) 8. Italy has several small Mediterranean islands, some of which are volcanic, including the 8-island archipelago of the Aeolian Islands 9. It has 2 large islands - Sicily (largest in the Mediterranean sea) and Sardinia (second-largest) 10.
