Question:

What are the basic items to keep in a car?

I just got a new car. This is technically my first. I am looking for a list of things to keep in there in case of an emergency, or just plan convenience. I already have oil, jumper cables and bottled water on my list. These are the sort of things I had in mind. Thanks, Isobel

Sounds like your alternator is beginning to fail. Your alternator provides current and power throughout your car and also recharges your battery. It's powered by your engine through a rotating alternator belt. When you press on the accelerator it spins the engine and the alternator belt faster to produce more current from your alternator. If the combination of electrical components draws too much power, your car will stall altogether. (braking will draw power from all the brake lights in the back that need current) Put your car on idle and rev it up to 2500 rpm. Measure the voltage across your battery terminals with a multimeter. If it reads less than 13.5 volts, then the diodes in your alternator are failing and your car will soon have insufficient power to run your distributor and other electrical components. You should have it replaced as soon as possible to avoid being stalled and stranded somewhere without help. My alternator for my Civic 98 (101,000 m) went bad last month. A new alternator from your local auto parts store is about $120 - print a copy off the internet for proof of pricing. Hope this helps!
