Don't get a Dsyon. Costs to much or is cheaply made. We brought ours home and true nearly sucked the carpet off the floor but has already broken once and (if you ask me) is losing suction. Buy an old Hoover, I mean an OLD Hoover. Those go forever and are dirt cheep.
I just bought a Bissel at Best Buy for $85, and am very impressed with the performance. It picked up a *ton* of stuff that the old vac missed.
Dyson. I bought this vacuum in 2006 and it still runs like new. Hoovers don't work well, they will loose suctions after a few passes.
I swear by my Dyson. I purchased mine about five years ago and it is still the best vacuum cleaner I've ever used. It is so powerful that it really does pull the dust from beneath the carpet. I've always been opposed to carpeting, because it's nasty, and most vacuum cleaners cannot get all of the dirt up. A Dyson can and will get all of the dirt up. It's good to know that my Dyson has also taken quite the beating over the years. It fell down the stairs when I backed into it, and, that wa three years ago. It works like a charm. Do yourself a favor and purchase a Dyson. They are worth the money and they really never lose suction.

Do you want a vacuum that can operate on wood floors as well? Vacuums can also be used in vehicles or in shops. It is important to determine what you want to do with your vacuum cleaner before you set out to purchase one. There are so many options out there it really does pay to know what you want from your vacuum. type of flooring you want to vacuum. recommendations by your flooring company. My mother has a upright with all the attachments a person could use and it is a commercial grade. Nice machine. I have a Bissell and I like it very much. It can go from my hardwood floors to my rug to carpet with just a turn of the dial.
