Answer:

Cool Calories is what we use on the thoroughbredsStart slowly or it will give the horse the runs for a few daysBut I've found it really works well, and it is a powder, not something they have to chew up, that can be mixed in with their normal mash/grainGood luck!
I feed my 31 year old Omolene 400 (I had the same problems as you with the senior feed) it's formulated for race horses (that's what the bag says anyhow) it's high fat and low sugar and isn't supposed to make your horse hot (I'm not sure if that bit is true or not), she also gets a scoop of beet pulp and a half scoop of alfalfa cubes, all of it is soaked (they should make dentures for horses lol)You could also try adding half a cup of cooking oil to his feed, it's all fat, so it helps with weight, it also makes their coat and feet look healthier, and keeps them lubed up if you have issues with colicOat meal is also decent for gaining weight (just cook it up like you normally would), same goes for cream of wheat, lots of carbohydratesThere is a bunch more stuff you could try, I just don't remember all of it right nowI've never tried the weight gaining supplements.
I have similar problems with my 21 year old mareShes still got full set of teeth fortunatelyI currently have been using Farnams weight builder too, and it doesnt seem the be helpingIve used the Dumor Weight Booster in the past and that worked really wellYou can find it at Tractor SupplyOther than that Id say slowly switch your horse to a Senior feedMaybe try to add a little sweet feed or corn oil to his dietGood luck!
