Question:

What can I do to make an insulated cup that is going to be used to keep hot water from getting cold?

This is my physics assignment and I need to know how to make this as well as what materials to useMy class is having a contest to see whose cup can retain heat from boiling water the longestMy teacher said that we cannot buy the cupIt must be an original designOn the other hand, he is allowing us to use a styrofoam cup as one of our materialsWhat else can I use along with this styrofoam cup? Any ideas?

Your best bet is to use the styrofoam cup, but take a lesson from the construction method of a thermos bottleA thermos consists of two containers nested inside each other, with a vacuum in between themIt is not practical for you to use a vacuum in your project, but just by nesting one styrofoam cup inside a another one you will form an insulating layer of air between them that will help reduce heat lossAlso, wrap the outside of the inner cup with a thin layer of reflective gold foil (best) or aluminum foil, as infrared energy is reflected by theseThis is the reason that thermos bottles have a shiny metallic inner coatingSeal the space where the two cups meet at the top with silicone caulk to prevent the insulating air from escaping(Note: if you do have a way to create a glass vessel with a true vacuum between the walls, you will guarantee a win)Good luck~
