Question:

what caused my stainless steel sink to get rust spots?

I juuuust got a new stainless steel sink only 5 months ago, and it already has a couple rust spots on it.What caused this?!

Answer:

This is usually surface rust caused from other non-stainless objects coming in contact with the sink. It is a stain, more than actual rusting of the sink. Barkeepers Friend works well for cleaning stainless steel. Find it in the cleaning aisle of most larger stores.
Use a soft cloth or nylon sponge and a little bit of detergent on the spot. Do not use bleach, chlorine or otherwise. If this does not work, try a little baking soda. Always rince out the sink after you use it, soap film can leave a rainbow looking mark in the stainless steel. I take everything out of the sink after I wash dishes. I use a small amount of veg oil on a paper towel to shine up the sink.
if you leave any cast iron pans sit in the sink, rust will show or any silverware also, you can get rid of them with scouring powder but dont scrub too hard or you will scratch the sink
Stainless Steel is the marketing name. For truth in advertising, it should be called Stain Resistant Steel. It should be easy to scrub rust away with an SOS or Brillo pad. To prevent rust from recurring: * thoroughly rinse all chloride containing soaps away * scour the sink at least weekly to remove any residues * if the water source has high mineral content—especially iron—more frequent sink scouring is needed, plus towel drying the sink. * don't allow salt to remain in the sink—rinse it out
