Question:

What causes windshield wipers not to move back and forth, but motor is still running?

I,turn my windshield wipers and the motor is running but the wipers don‘t move. What causes this ?I, hope someone help me with my problem.

Answer:

If you are lucky, the nuts that hold the wiper arms to the pivot shafts have both come loose. Look where the wiper arm ends (at the bottom). There is either an exposed nut, a plastic cap that you may be able to remove with your fingers, or a hinged cover. Underneath the cap or cover is a nut. Tighten it! (You may find it easier to get to after opening the hood.) Good luck.
If both wipers do not move at all while the drive motor is running, it means that either the grooves in the splines are stripped and/or the mounting nuts are loose. Remove both wiper arms and run the wipers observing the movement of the splines. You may have a drive mechanism problem. It would help to know the make and year of the vehicle.
