Question:

What could cause a water pump to break in a 3 year old car?

My car is 3 years old and it only has 18,000 miles on it and I just got it back from the repair shop at the dealership because the water pump broke. They replaced the water pump and something else that was recalled. But I looked online and found water pumps should last a long time. What might have happened to it, and what would cause it to break?

Answer:

water pumps are cast aluminum normally...maybe there was a weak spot on the pump casting and it failed (but you would of overheated and had a mjor coolant loss that you would of noticed), or maybe the impellor is what internally failed and or the bearing on the shaft.. but yes normally water pumps last for awhile. I usually dont see replacement of water pumps unless doing timing belts and or high milage...but hell annything nowadays since everything seems to be made in China is cheap and poorly built compared to the old days...
sometimes crap breaks. if this water pump lasts 18,000 then you have a serious design flaw.. or you are doing something as the driver to break it. But sometimes you get a dud, it happens. not to worry. that's why you get a new car, warranty is awesome.
no one knows why some times parts break prematurely.. they just do. most manufactures give u 3to 5 year warranty depending on manufacture. ex. ford only gives you 3 yr on any power train component vs. all japanese motors, honda, toyota and many other give you 5 yrs 60k miles warranty .OJO, for most people do not take that under consideration when buying a new car..... at this point i recommend that you purchase an extended warranty if you can it will save you lots of money..... buy the best.
There may be a few answers, one may be the bearings went or have worn out. However with only 18,000 mi. it hardly seams likely. Another is when the water or coolant does not have enough anti-freeze, not only for the winter time but also for the summer time. From freezing the pump to warping the parts in the pump when over heating.
Hi Christina, My sister's little boy had the same thing. Unfortunately their family doctor prescribed a stimulant laxative which is very harsh especially for young children and made the situation worse (if you must use laxative as last result, a bulk forming is the most gentle and least habitual forming). I have some great possible remedies and please forgive if you have already tried: the best would be increasing water intake everyday, slowly increase fiber intake but not too fast with fruits or veggies, natural non sugar (low sugar Dannon) yogurt is really big recommendation, aloe vera juice, flaxseed, comfrey in warm water as tea, and/or small amount of molasses in warm water(1/4 tsp). Sometimes constipation is due to iron medications or other prescriptions otherwise usually not enough fluid intake or fiber. Applesauce is good with no sugar not even artifical sugars. Cut any soda intake or high sugar foods. Also, try relaxation times(read favorite book together or quiet, slow activity) for both of you. Stress on either of you or getting high energy about situation can really prolong. Best of luck.
