Question:

What do i need to do to hatch a tortoise egg?

my tortoise laid an egg yesterday and i have kept it warm in my home made incubator but i just want to know if there is anything i need to do to give it a chance to hatch.

Answer:

I hope you didn't rotate the egg at all. Rotating the egg will kill the embryo. Other things to remember are to keep the egg in a sanitized container and to have an adequate level of humidity.
A hammer? I guess you should let the mother tortoise take care of it in her own way appropriately and it must only hatch after the required development, NOT PREMATURELY.
Most tortoise species can have their eggs hatched at approximately 30 degrees Celsius. I use moistened vermiculite (available at garden centres) which i half bury the eggs. You really need to monitor the humidity as it is also very important. Anywhere between 60% and 80% is fine humidity wise. Is your tortoise with a male? If not i wouldn't get my hopes up. Hatching can be anyway past 60 days depending on the species.
