Question:

What do [these brackets] mean?

I read ALOT! And that reading includes magazines. For over 20 years of reading magazines, in EVERY SINGLE interview I'd see a quote from an artist, let's say Quincy Jones. And he'll say something like:I got emotional when I found out like [Mike died].What do those brackets mean?? I was never taught about these in school and I can't even fathom up an example as to what I THINK they may mean.

Answer:

If it's a quote like that, it means that they added the words in the bracket and that the person didn't really say it verbally in that sentence. They do this so that you can understand what the speaker was talking about easier.
I think that the brackets signify what the person is alluding to but may not have actually spoken. The writer puts in these words in brackets to explain his sentence more clearly.
