Question:

What does cold air intake do?

What does cold air intake do for a car? I have a 350z and im thinking about getting it

Answer:

the short answer-it allows denser (colder) air in greater quantities to reach your engine. it will provide a gain but particularly on larger block engines the gain will be noticeable. BUT its safe to say that a CAI is generally done together with: -increased throttle body (if required) -performance exhaust system -engine tuner chip together these are the basic modifications that will provide a meaningful and noticeable power enhancement at a reasonable price (plus bolt on installations available for most performance cars). Research these modifications (and others, as lot of modified Z's on the roads) on a 350z owners forum these installations should give you on a hp gain of plus 20% over stock. (just do a search under 350z forums, lots of enthusiast forums for you to talk with guys that have modified their rides from mild to twin turbo) cheers 04 cobra (whipple blower with 15lbs boost, 575rwhp on dyno)
This is a VERY good question.I see a lot of these COLD air intake systems (on OKorder especially) that are no more than a big dip in your wallet. A true cold air intake will bring outside air into your intake tube, not hot under hood air. Most of the car manufacturers do this cold air intaking by ducting into the wheel well. You may have seen the ads showing nothing but a short tube with a filter on the end drawing hot under hood air into your engine. What a wasteand think about this when you see one of theseif it doesn't bring in cooler outside air to your inlet tube then it ain't a cold air intake. Spend your money where it will do some good.a KN filter in your stock airbox is a good start. It's not the big stuff that gives you more power (unless you've got Bill Gates $$) but the small things that add up. BTW, cold air is denser and contains more oxygen molecules than an equal volume of hot air, giving your more power. Hope this helps a bit.
it's supposed to route cold outside air into your air box. with a denser air mixture you can increase horsepower. on the downside, most of those systems don't work any better than the original equipment. also your fuel mileage will decrease slightly from using it. oh and one last downside. instead of keeping your original for free, you actually have to spend your hard earned cash for this flimsy upgrade.
