Question:

What equipment do I need to dig up a ton of earth and rock?

A bobcat, Excavator, or any other ones that would work best?

Answer:

Consider the location of where you are digging (lawn, gravel drive, empty lot). It is important to use equipment that can safely maneuver in the area you are digging (turf tires in lawn areas, heavy treaded tires for rougher terrain). Also, how deep are you digging? Bobcats work well in open areas, while excavtors will perform best in tight narrow holes and work environments. Hope this helps! -Josh
GE is right. If you're trying to save money that's the best way. Use a Sharp-Shooter, the skinny shovel, it can bust up rock as long as you hold it tight and keep banging the rocks. For really big rocks they have a thing called a Beaty-Bit, It's basically a manual jack hammer. Where a back-brace.
A backhoe...or a front end loader, a steam shovel, an excavator, and a bobcat would all work.
A ton is not as much as you think, 1 ton of earth mixed with rock can be dug by hand in a few hours.
