Question:

What is a Brake Master Cylinder?

I just got out the shop for a state inspection and got rejected due to the above. They said it was leaking between the two connected parts, I believe. He suggested a Power Brake Booster which is unknown to me. The quote he gave was around 725.00$ for parts and labor. Is this accurate or am I getting ripped off? And can I find this Power Brake Booster cheaper online?

Answer:

YOu are very confused! Repalcing the POWR BOOSTER will have no effect upon a leaking MASTER CYLIDNER! The BOOSTER is a vaccum operated diaphragm enclosed in the LARGE BALCK METAL cylinder viwd whent he hood is opened. A LEAKING BRAKE MASTER CYLIDNER many times can be reapried by simply doing a simple POWER BRAKE FLUID CHANGE! It MUST be done under pressure and using onlyl the genuine fludi from your dealership! BRAKE FLUIDS are not reall miscible and all havve different ester compounds. ALL BRAKE FLUIDS WEAR OUT turn BROWN and get water-logged and THINNER as it ages! THis THIN FLUID has lost its' boiling point protection and then truns into TOXIC WASTE and eats holes in alloys, and distorts inner seals! ALL CAR MAKERS want ou to POWER FLUSH aand fill the BRAKE FLUID every 2-3years! It is MADE to absorb moisture fromt eh air. After SOLONG, it is just ACIDIC GARBAGE and is VERY destructive to brake parts! most MASTER CYLLIDNERS and CALIPERS will seize, leak, or brake sysem ROT from the inside out! HOSES and BRAKE LINES rust through as the fludi gets MORE and MROE WATER-LOGGED! GOOD LUCK!!
sounds like your master cylinder is leaking. there is a seal on the rod that goes into the power brake booster. that would be where the fluid is coming from. master cylinder rebuild should fix this. as far as the power brake booster, it runs off vacum from the engine. no fluid in it. Get a second opinion on parts and labor.
The brakes on your car work by using hydralic fluid to create the pressure required to stop the car. The master cylinder is where the brake fluid is stored and distributed throught the entire braking system. If the master cylinder is leaking the brakes are losing pressure which in turn makes the brakes less effective. Eventually you will not have enough brake pressure to stop the car, the brakes will fail and you'll cause an accident. Take your car to your local mechanic for an estimate. Don't trust anything the inspection agent told you. Get a certified mechanics estimate for the repairs. This is something you cannot ignore.
