Question:

What is a depth in a tire thread that tells you the tire is still good?

Tire dealer reported 5/32 on front tires 7/32 on back tires what does that mean

Answer:

Most all-season passenger tires when new are molded at 10 to 11/32 tread depth. Molded into the tread are wear indicator bars that are flush with the tread when it is worn down to 2/32 remaining. This is the legal minimum in most (but not all) states. However, below 4/32 remaining tread depth traction in poor weather starts to drop off rather dramatically. Testing shows there is a big difference between the traction of a tire at 4/32 vs. 2/32. Therefore, it is recommended to replace passenger tires at 4/32. Hope that helps. Bridgestone Firestone North America Tire, LLC (BFNT) has a practical suggestion for commemorating the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. While Lincoln is broadly associated with a multitude of accomplishments and characteristics, from his humble upbringing to the Gettysburg Address, perhaps a lesser-known claim to fame is Honest Abe's contribution to 21st century automotive maintenance. That's right, Abe Lincoln has made a significant contribution to car care. The Lincoln penny test has become a tried-and-true method of determining when it's time to get new tires. The procedure is as simple as placing a penny in the tread and using Abe Lincoln's likeness as your guide. Here's the three-step penny test: 1. Take a penny and pinch Abe's body between your thumb and forefinger. 2. Put Lincoln's head into one of the grooves on the tread. Select a point on your tire where tread appears the lowest. 3. If any part of Abe Lincoln's head is obscured by the tread, you're driving with the legal and safe amount of tread. If you can see above his head, where it says In God We Trust, take a hint: you're ready for a new tire. Why worry about tread depth? If your tread gets below 2/32 of an inch, your car's ability to grip the road in adverse conditions is greatly reduced. Furthermore, insufficient tread is not only dangerous; in many states it is illegal (legal tread depth is 2/32 of an inch - the exact distance from the tip of Abe's head to the rim of a penny).
These stories are great! I'm becoming addicted. Wish you would change your last name, though. It doesn't suit you. Addition: How 'bout Lucy Love? Because you are a love and bring beauty to this sad world.

look on your tires and follow the tread around and you should find a line that crosses thr tread at 90 degrees. this is the wear line. when the tread is wore down level with that line its time to replace your tires. the tire dealer was measuring the depth at this point i presume. you should be ok but you may want to rotate the frnt to the rear, always have your best tread on the front as you are able to handle a blowout on the rear much better than one on the front
