Question:

what is a hoist puller? what is it used for?

You can see one here: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/ShopEquipment/Hoists/PRD~0618153P/1-Ton%2BHoist%2BPuller.jspCan I use it to pull up fence posts?

Answer:

A hoist puller is commonly refereed to as a come along or hand winch. They are used for lifting or pulling things. They can also be used to straighten things or even as clamps. You can use it to pull a fence post to the side as long you have a suitable anchor if you need to pull it Straight up you will need an overhead anchor.
I have used them to lift engines out of cars and pulling stuck cars out of ditches. I have lifted heavy objects using several at a time. I have used them to straighten fence posts and tension a chain link fence.
its used for any damn thing you want.
