Here are a few camping tricks for keeping warm while camping. Heat up stones and wrap them well then insert them in your sleeping bag. Never sleep directly on the ground, if you have no ground cover use pine needles to make a bed under your tent. You can also dig a rectangular hole, fill it with hot coals which you then cover up with earth then lay a blanket over it all. It is the ideal to sleep warm. Where ever you place your bed, lite up a fire for a few hours in order to dry up the ground and to heat it up. then remove the fire and clean the ground, lay canvas on the ground. You can also use a tent heater, although I have never done this myself. Since the heater stays outside, there are no smelly odors or dangerous gases, no chance of burning a child or sleeping bag and no condensation either.(runs on a 12V battery) Its best not to sleep too close to the camfire for obvious reasons.
Eartha Q has it all figured out! The only time I have a fire inside is when I'm sleeping in this one cave I know of (this gets warm really quick!). I have also stayed in a teepee before with a fire, but if you build it out of tarps it will be flammable. For a teepee you would need leather or canvas. Warm stones are great, but they don't stay warm all night. They just help you get to sleep. Bring tons and tons of blankets if you don't have the proper sleeping bags.
