Question:

what is the best way to boost the humidity on a garter snakes tank for it to be able to shed?

i have the eco earth loose coconut substrate and i need help on how can i boost the humidity for the garter snake and can i feed my snake when it has foggy blue eyes and what should be the heat level while it is sheding and is it normal for it to be in the heat given by the heat lamp

Answer:

Hello! Coconut substrate is very good for holding moisture, so you're good thereI would recommend keeping aluminum foil or damp towels over half of the lid, or covering the water bowl at leastSpray often, but not often enough to get moldDAMP not WET is the keySphagnum moss also hold humidity if you spray it and keep it damp(I use it and it is wonderful, can be found at pet stores)Heat level for garters isn't as picky as other snakes, you can keep it comfortable at 75-80As long as it doesn't drop into the 60's or anything at aytime, shed or notIt is normal for a snake to bask in heat, don't worry about thatThey're cold blooded, and have to move from cold to warm to regulate their body temperaturesYou can try and offer your snake food while they are in that blue phase(milky eyes)If they refuse, it's perfectly normalSome snakes will eat in blue, some don't like taking food until afterGood luck, hope this helps!
