You are wasting your time and money, if the house is in such a condition it would be better concentrating on insulating the house anything that is in the porch that needs protection from the cold should be taken into the house/
The reason why it wasn't done is because it wouldn't make sense to insulate the bottom half of the wall if the top was openActually with a house built in 1895 you would be lucky to have insulation anywhereIf the inside of the walls is open you can staple some kraft-faced fiberglass insulation bats in thereHow do you plan on closing the top half though? If you are just slapping up some plywood, insulating the bottom half will probably only make a noticeable difference in the thickness of your wallet.
