A cold air intake is a better flowing replacement for the OEM intake but is designed to pull in the coldest air possible. To do this most have filter in the fender out of the hot engine bay. An intercooler is like a radiator for air that is normally between a turbo and throttle body. It's purpose is to cool down the air that was heated during from the compression of the turbo.
