Question:

What is the maximum pressure a tire can take?

Above the rated PSI, what is the threshold on a tire before it explodes?

Answer:

the sidewalls generally only have maximum inflation pressures ignore those. the recommended pressures are usually on one of the doors or the fuel filler flap or even on the glove compartment lid
If you still have your owners manual. Look in there for the correct tire pressure. If not call a place where they sell tires and i am sure they will answer your questions for you.
It probably depends on the tire. Be safe and keep it within 5lbs of the rated pressure.
I think it's 55 psi. my pressure measuring pen only goes up to 55 psi and the instructions for my tires says don't inflate over 55. so I think 55 is the magic number here, but don't be stupid and try it.
Anything above the maximum tire pressure when cold rating. Anything above can be very dangerious, not only to yourself, but to others. This should not be attempted by anyone. Use the rating for tire pressure designated by the manufacture (usually on the door jamb sicker, or owners manual) and if it is below the maximum tire rating, all is good, but if it is above, the tires need to be replaced with a tire that can handle the pressure recomended for the vehicle. A tire that is under inflated, can be just as dangerious as a tire that is over inflated. When a tire will blow out by being above the maximum rating, depends on the materials and tire style and design. Some tires can handle a lot more pressure above maximum because of the materials and design used to make the tire, others will handle a lot less becasue of it too.
