Question:

What kind of house/aptsare these called that I see in a lot of cities?

I know those are connected to mini shops but I see a lot of them in my city that aren't.

Answer:

Cover with the ring or foil and then put on a lower rack.
Are you talking single or double crust recipes? For a double crusted pie, I start with the (preheated) oven at 425 for 15 minutes, then lower the oven to 350 for about 45 minutes (most fruit pies) and the crusts are fine without over browningI use Crisco in my short crust and no sugarIf you use butter or margarine instead of shortening, that might make a difference as well as the sugar.
I call them walk-upsI'm from Philly and those type of apartments in the city are very commonThey used to be very large homes or multi-family dwellings when they were originally builtI call them walk-ups because 99% of them don't have elevators in the building and I've known quite a few that were five/six story walk-upsNot very fun when moving in and/or out of them.
cut the edges off and bake them separately at a lower temperature then put them back on after baking
