Question:

what kind of rug will cats be least able to destroy with scratching?

What kind of rug should I buy that will stand up best to cat's claws besides sisal?

Answer:

Berber is an excellent choice. Very durable and they won't be able to pull up the pile as much if at all. I have a throw rug that shows no wear after 5 years.
take a cardboard box, cut it into strips 3 inches wide.16 to 24 inches long depending on the size of your cat. find or make a box 6 to 8 inches wide, to fit the strips in. take the 3 inch stips you cut and turn them one edge [so you can see the corrugation] fit the strips into your box so tight that there is no movement. before you fit the strips in put a small amount of catnip in the bottom of the box. the cats will use this like a scratching post. do not put too much catnip in the bottom or the cats will just lay on the box. when the cats have destroyed the box build another...
medium short shagg carpets withstand claw attacks best I found. Overly long and overly short become bald pretty soon becuase the threads come off the base when the cat claws. Looped carpets or rugs are less attractive to cats as scratching material, but most will still try them out with the result that theur claws sometimes get caught in it. I have a living room rug that has 3/4 inchin long threads. It has survived two cats for... let me see... three years now. looks still new after vacuuming.
You can take your rug suggestions from others here with good experience of it. I will just add that the inexpensive cardboard floor scratchers (about $10-12) from the pet store might deter your cats from scatching any carpet or rug. You can put catnip on them for enticement too (as a matter of fact they come with some catnip).
cats like to scratch anything!!!!!!!! there is no rug that would stop your cat from scratching. There is something to make it scratch less though! It is called a cat scratch post. You can buy them at PetSmart or Petco. Ask a vet and they will have suggustions.
