First chair violin is an exceptional player. There is a first chair for every section of the orchestra; for example, there is a first chair cello. The first chair violinist is usually the one who helps everyone tune.

First chair is the leader. They are usually the best players, or at any rate, are choosen for their abilities and reliability. First chair, first violin is called concertmaster. First chair, 2nd violin is Principal Second. First chair viola, cell and bass are all Principals also, of their respective sections. Same with brass and woodwind sections. It may be, at least in some cases, somewhat subjective or based on seniority, but usually the first chair is the best or perhaps more expeirenced or reliable player. They're the section leader. They're responsible for making sure the parts are prepared, and other duties, such as playing solos, and making decisions in small matters, with the help of the conductor.
